The word “Tattvas” is a Hindu term connotating "realities, or states of being. The Tattvas represent primordial energies representing the five elements of Spirit (Akasha), Air (Vayu), Fire (Tejas), Water (Apas), and Earth (Prithivi).

Methods for Visualization Using Tattvas

The 5 basic symbols themselves represent the Root Power of the Element in it’s most raw state. However, permutations of those energies were represented by “seeding” other elements into one another. This was done by placing a smaller Tattvic symbol within a larger one, thus altering the qualities of the Root Element by blending it’s energies with the seeded one.

An example of this is to take a symbol of Apas (silver cresent) and upon this symbol, place the symbol of Tejas (red triangle), thus creating the elemental quality known as “Fire of Water”. This element would be visualized as steam – Water in it’s heated state. Another result of this elemental combination would be a liquid chemical (such as an acid), capable of burning.

By permutating the Tattvas, it is possible to achieve 25 combinations of compounded elemental qualities. This includes seeding a Tattva with it’s own element, e.g. two red triangles, indicating “Fire of Fire” (or Tejas of Tejas). The seed Tattva is the activating force and the background Tattva is the element upon which it acts.
