CHAKRAS: WHEELS OF LIFE

General Information

The most common system of chakras outlines that there are 7 main bodily Energy Vortices. According to ancient texts, a chakra is a place in the body where 216 nadis (“energy channels”) cross over one another, forming energy spirals. In fact, there are thousands of minor chakras located in the hands, feet, ears, etc .

The 7 chakra system can be used to illustrate many interested things - see below
Chakras have been linked to the following subjects:

* Colours / vibrations
* Levels of consciousness
* The Tree of Life (Kabbalah)
* Planets
* Sacraments
* Elements
* Angels / Deities
* Gems, Stones
* Herbs, Oils & Incenses
* Sounds – (seed syllables)

Depending on what books one reads, chakras may be assigned different colors; however, the colors mentioned are just guidelines. One must find out for oneself. Some of higher chakras are not so much actual, visual colors as much as they are changes in vibrational frequencies.

The higher chakras are not necessarily more valuable than the lower ones, merely more refined and finer in substance.

CHAKRAS: WHEELS OF LIFE

An Introduction

Definition of Chakras

The Chakras are the energy centres in the subtle body which regulate the energy flows and interaction of the physical and subtle bodies (the word, “chakra” is Sanskrit for "wheel" or "disk".) There are seven main chakras, the lowest commonly recognized to be located at the base of the spine, up to the highest, located at the crown of the head. Connecting these chakras are 72,000 “nadis”, tiny energy channels woven through the subtle body like the threads of a spider's web.

Coiled around the base chakra resides the serpent Goddess Kundalini, an aspect of Shakti, the Great Goddess. "Kundalini” is another Sanskrit word which means "spiral" or "coil", which is significant in light of the supposed coiling of the energy itself. It is interesting that the DNA double helix repeats every 3.5 A° (angstroms or 10-10m), and of course the double serpents woven around the caduceus wand cross 3-1/2 half times as well. These highly suggestive correspondences emphasize the interconnection, both symbolic and actual, of the subtle body with the physical body.

The chakras are commonly depicted as lotus flowers, which are considered sacred in India. The lotus grows in mud, symbolizing a path of development from the primitive to the divine, thus mirroring the journey from the base chakra which roots us in the earth, to the crown chakra or thousand-petaled lotus, which brings us cosmic consciousness.

Like the petals of a flower, these chakras can be opened and closed. Illness and fatigue can often result from chakras being too open, too closed or out of balance, the physical body reflecting the imbalance in the subtle one. A balance needs to be reached, where in mundane daily life, the chakras are partially open, but not too much so, giving us awareness without excessive vulnerability to the inescapable stresses of our existence. During magickal work we may open the chakras to aid in altering our consciousness and expanding our awareness of the subtle (and subsequently closing them as much as we feel we need to after the magickal work is done).

As the kundalini energy rises, spiritually “piercing” the chakras, it activates each chakra. When the kundalini reaches up to the crown, it unites with the Shiva energy, residing there, fully enlightening the being. The kundalini’s journey from the base chakra to the crown reflects the tantric view of the creation of the universe.

According to this view, before the Beginning Shiva and Shakti were united as one in eternal sexual union, unaware of any division, even unaware of themselves. This is the state of bliss and unity of the crown chakra. Slowly Shiva and Shakti began to become aware of each other, opening their eyes. They then, saw each other (this being the power of “seeing” ruled by the Ajna chakra).

Moving down the chakras Shiva and Shakti separate from each other. Shakti dances the Dance of Illusion, creating the world of diverse objects. Shiva then perceives himself as many different people and is caught up in this world of illusion. The way to return to this primal state of bliss is to return to worship of the Goddess and awakening the chakras. According to the tantric view each of us (male and female) has Shiva residing in our crown, and we need to waken the Goddess to unite with Shiva and carry out the creation process in reverse, and return to the state of bliss of the united Shiva and Shakti.

Chakras: Descriptions

Base Chakra - #1 - Muladhara

MULADHARA (meaning "root" or "support") is located at the Base of the Spine. It is symbolically depicted as having 4 Red petals, and the seed-sound Lam in a Golden Yellow Square, corresponding to Earth. There is also an Inverse Red Triangle (symbolic of the yoni of the Goddess) corresponding to the Sun, Moon and Fire (the Gold, White & Red Light Rays), where the Goddess Kundalini resides coiled three and a half times. It is the Centre of Instinct, Survival, Pleasure and Base Sexuality.

As the chakra of Earth, this element gives us the quality of cohesive resistance and the weight of solidness. In the physical body it represents the sense of Smell, controlling the Gonads and Adrenal Glands, and governs the Excretory System, as well as all that is solid in the body such as bones, teeth, nails and hair. At this level of being, one has the experience of security and satisfaction in one's existing state, being comfortable as one is, hence there is no urge to move on and this may lead to inertia.

It has the mantras LAM (Sanskrit) and RA (Tibetan) attributed to it, and responds to Red Light. As well as being the centre for projecting Prana as Red Light, Muladhara also connects to the chakras in the Feet which connect to the Earth and allow interaction with earth energies, as well as keeping "one's feet on the ground". Without grounding we become unstable, with a tendency to fly off the handle or become deluded and live in a fantasy world.

Calling energy down from the Crown chakra to the base is as powerful as sending Kundalini upwards. By grounding we maintain our contact with the Earth, with its boundaries, edges and limitations. Being grounded enables us to hold on to things (to have) and to contain, without this quality we lose our ability to contain and become an empty vessel. Illnesses associated with imbalance in the base chakra are obesity, hemorrhoids, constipation, anorexia, degenerative arthritis and frequent illness.

Suggested Exercise

Stand straight, arms at your side, feet about a shoulder-width apart. Imagine a line drawn from the heavens down through the top of the head to between the feet.
Breathing in, rise upon your toes, bringing your hands slowly up to chest height, and keeping your body straight and bottom tucked in. Breathing out, come down on your heels bending your knees as you do, bringing your hands back down again by your sides and sinking down to the floor.

Your body should be relaxed as you do this and the movement should flow. Imagine that you are bringing down energies from the heavens into your feet, the earth and your base chakra. Raising and lowering hands with the rise and fall of the body helps to influence the downward flow.

Sacral Chakra - #2 - Svaddisthana

SVADDISTHANA (meaning "sweetness") is located at the level of the Sacrum, below the Navel. It is symbolically depicted with 6 scarlet petals, and the seed-sound Vam in a White (Lunar) Crescent, corresponding to Water. It is the Centre of Change, Creativity (including Procreation), Nurturing, Sexuality and Sensuality. Singleness becomes duality, our point becomes a line, and we develop a degree of freedom and complexity as we become aware of and realise our difference from others.

Polarity manifests itself at this chakra - male/female, night/day, etc. The polarity of opposites by its nature creates movement, without movement there is inertia, entropy. Although in some ways manifest at all levels, socialization, sexuality, sensuality and the desire to reproduce form the kernel of this process, and so this chakra is also concerned with social interaction.

In the physical body it represents the sense of Taste, controlling to the Ovaries and Testicles, and governs the Spinal Column, the Womb, the Bladder, and the Kidneys. It has the mantras VAM (Sanskrit) and MA (Tibetan) to it, and responds to Orange Light. Illnesses associated with imbalances in the second chakra are impotence and frigidity (sexual dysfunction), uterine and bladder disorders.

Breathe in and slowly raise your hips off the floor, keeping your shoulders on the floor, going as high as you can get your hips. Breathing out slowly your hips to the floor, moving the back down one vertebrae at a time.

Standing up straight, bend knees slightly and drop pelvis forward. Keeping knees bent and flexible, rotate the pelvis in gradually decreasing circles, and then slowly increase the circle rotation size. Then repeat rotating in the other direction. Head and feet should remain totally still. Similar movement to belly dancing.

Solar Plexus Chakra - #3 - Manipura

MANIPURA (meaning "lustrous jewel") is located at the Solar Plexus. It is symbolically depicted with 10 Dark or Black petals, and the seed-sound Ram in an Inverse Red Triangle, corresponding to Fire. It is the Centre of Interaction with the Universe, of the Digestive Process, and of the Emotions. Manipura has the qualities of expansiveness and warmth, of joviality in ourselves.

While earth and water in the first two chakras are downward moving, we see upward motion now with the upward expansiveness of fire. This is the chakra of transformation, both through the combustive process of digestion and through transforming the inertia of earth and water into action, energy and power. In magick we must develop our will and power consciously, which we do through increasing our awareness and by disciplined magickal work. Powerlessness often arises through ignorance about how to change our behaviour appropriately to the situations we encounter.

Working with this chakra produces feeling of power in ourselves which help our development. In the physical body it represents the sense of Sight, controlling to the Pancreas, and governs the Stomach, the Liver, the Gall Bladder and the Nervous System. It has the mantras RAM (Sanskrit) and DA (Tibetan) attributed to it, and responds to Yellow Light. Illnesses associated with imbalances in this chakra are ulcers, diabetes and hypoglycemia.

Heart Chakra - #4 - Anahata

ANAHATA (meaning "unstruck") is located at the Heart. It is symbolically depicted with 12 Red petals, and the seed-sound Yam in a Gold-edged Hexagram on a Smoky Circle, the focus of Air. It is the Centre of Love, Being & Equilibrium, the source of Harmony. Anahata has the airy qualities of mobility, gentleness and lightness. These qualities are expressed through movement towards, thus as relationship or sympathy. In the physical body it represents the sense of Touch - we are "in touch" when we relate positively to something.

Too much energy put into relationship with others will produce oversympathy and anxiety. It controls the Thymus Gland, and governs the Heart, Blood, Vagus Nerve, and Circulatory System. It has the mantras YAM (Sanskrit) and SA (Tibetan) attributed to it, and responds to Green Light. Nadis from this chakra run to chakras in the hands which may be used to direct Prana as Gold Light projected from the Anahata. Illnesses associated with imbalances in this chakra are asthma, respiratory problems, high blood pressure, heart conditions.

Sit or stand comfortably with hands held out in front of you, shoulder height with elbows straight. Turn one palm downward and the other upward, quickly open and close both hands several times until your hands feel tired.

Switch positions of hands and repeat until hands are tired. Continue switching hands until it becomes too uncomfortable. Drop arms, open fists and bring palms together slowly. Move hands closer and further in and out and feel the energy between your hands.

This exercise helps the heart chakra through the hand chakras that connect to it, and is a very good exercise to do before healing work, particularly laying on of hands.

Throat Chakra - #5 - Vishuddha

VISHUDDHA (meaning "purification") is located at the Throat. It is symbolically depicted with 16 Smoky petals, and the seed-sound Ham in the centre in a White Circle, the focus of Aether. It is the Centre of Active Magickal Power (through the voice – as in the Bible’s opening words, "In the beginning was the Word") and of Dreaming. Vishuddha has the quality of space, it is the place from which the four lower elements are formed and to which they will return, and is the latency behind them.

The throat chakra is the bridge between the thought processes of the Ajna chakra and the bodily processes of the lower chakras. In the physical body it represents the sense of Hearing, controlling to the Thyroid Gland, and governs the Lungs, Alimentary Canal, and the Hearing, Bronchial and Vocal Apparatus. It has the mantras HAM (Sanskrit) and SE (Tibetan) to it. Illnesses associated with imbalances in the throat chakra are thyroid problems, throat and ear conditions.

In the physical body it controls the Pituitary Gland, and represents Intuition, governing the Lower Brain, the Second (least dominant) Eye, Nose, and Nervous System. It has the mantras AUM (Sanskrit) and SO (Tibetan) attributed to it, and responds to Indigo Light. Illnesses associated with imbalances in this chakra are blindness, headaches and nightmares.

It is symbolically depicted with 1000 Brilliant petals and is the Centre of Evolution, the residence of the Divine Spark or Bindu, the focus of Thought. It represents Consciousness, and rules all the processes and actions of the body and mind.

In the physical body it controls the Pineal Gland, and governs the Upper Brain and Sorcerer's (First - more dominant) Eye. It has the mantras GN [as in the GN at the end of AUMGN] (Sanskrit) and HUNG (Tibetan) attributed to it, and responds to Violet light.
